Intergeneration Month

Intergeneration Month is observed every September to encourage people of different ages to connect, communicate, and learn from one another. The month highlights the value of friendships, family ties, mentoring, shared activities, and community programs that bring younger and older generations together.

History of Intergeneration Month

Intergeneration Month grew from the work of Sandy Kraemer, who founded the nonprofit Fountain Institute in 1987 to study intergenerational issues. The organization was later renamed the Intergeneration Foundation and focused on helping people of different ages understand one another through communication, education, and shared experiences.

The observance began as Intergeneration Day in 2000 and was originally held on the first Sunday in October. Over time, organizers and participants found that a single day was not enough for planning meaningful intergenerational events, so the idea expanded into a month-long observance. Today, Intergeneration Month is associated with September and is used by families, schools, senior communities, libraries, museums, nonprofits, and local groups to promote stronger relationships across age groups.

How to Take Part in Intergeneration Month

Intergeneration Month can be observed by spending time with someone from a different generation. Call a parent or grandparent, invite an older neighbor for coffee, ask a younger relative about their interests, or organize a family dinner where everyone has time to talk.

You can also volunteer at a senior center, nursing home, school, library, or community organization. Good intergenerational communication begins with patience, respect, and curiosity. Listen carefully, ask questions, share stories, and look for common interests such as music, food, books, gardening, crafts, sports, local history, or technology.
