Flossing Day

Flossing Day is celebrated on the fourth Friday of November in America. An important holiday every year tells people about the benefits of the procedure. Today, buying a device is not a problem, but earlier people used horse hair. Do you take care of your mouth?

History

If there were mentions of a toothbrush in the 15th century in Chinese chronicles, then dental floss appeared much later. We owe it to dentist Levi Spear Parmley from New Orleans: he daily faced deplorable situations of patients, it was impossible to look at their teeth without tears. And this was easily explained – people simply did not take care of their oral cavity, and this was considered quite normal.

The dentist published a book in which he described the methods of care – powder, toothbrushes and silk threads. Moreover, more attention was paid to the latter: the thread removed the remnants of food from the space between the teeth. He realized that it was the stuck food that caused bacteria to multiply and destroy teeth. Other physicians continued his principles.

Codman & Shurtleff first introduced factory-made dental floss in 1882. In 1896, a larger scale production took place. Unfortunately, she still did not gain due popularity in these years – a real boom happened only after 1990.

Interesting facts

Did you know:

  • in 1988, two criminals escaped from a New York prison by sliding down the dental floss like a tightrope. Before escaping, they took out a product and tied something like a rope out of it;
  • one type of thread will not suit all people: you need to build on the condition of your teeth;
  • the product is not suitable for people with implants;
  • even braces can be cleaned with a thread.

How to celebrate
