World Laughter Day is celebrated in many countries on the first Sunday of May. The main purpose is to raise awareness of laughter and its positive healing properties.
History
The founder of World Laughter Day is family doctor Madan Kataria from Mumbai, India. The idea arose from Laughter Yoga associations, where instructors teach people to increase their happiness hormones, and experience feelings of love, forgiveness, compassion, and joy. This is a unique practice that helps people become happier through a simple, universal skill—laughter.
Madan Kataria believed in the power of Laughter Yoga to dissolve adversity and even heal illness. In 1998, she organized the first Laughter Day in Mumbai, which attracted thousands of participants from local and international Laugh Clubs.
