Working Parents Day

Working Parents’ Day honors parents who raise children while continuing to work. Balancing these responsibilities can be challenging, but it allows families to provide for their loved ones. The holiday is observed annually on September 16th.

History

It is unclear who first proposed Working Parents’ Day, but it serves as a great way to show appreciation and support for parents everywhere. In the United States, both parents in about 61% of families work full-time while raising children.

In the 17th and early 20th centuries, gender roles were not always clearly defined, especially among immigrants from southern countries. Even with children, both parents often worked under harsh conditions and for low wages. In the second half of the 20th century, social expectations shifted. Television and movies often depicted the typical family as a working father and a mother who stayed home with the children and managed the household. This image became so ingrained that those who didn’t fit the mold were sometimes criticized.

Today, society is moving beyond these stereotypes. Parents commonly work together to provide for their families. Many people now adjust their work schedules to spend more time with their children, seeking a better work-life balance.
