Valentine’s Day

February 14 marks one of the most romantic holidays of the year—Valentine’s Day. It’s the perfect day to confess your feelings, share plans for the future with your significant other, and arrange an unforgettable date. For those who haven’t yet found love, Cupid may still have an arrow or two for anyone who needs it.

History

Some historians believe that Valentine’s Day originated from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, where people honored a deity with offerings of goats, symbols of fertility.

Catholics also celebrate February 14 as a day of remembrance for Saint Valentine. He believed that sincere feelings could overcome any obstacle and, against the orders of the ruler, secretly performed marriages for legionnaires. Emperor Claudius II thought that love made his soldiers weak and distracted, so he sentenced Valentine to death. While imprisoned, Valentine met and fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. She returned his affection, even though they both knew their relationship was doomed. Just days later, Valentine was executed.

Interesting Facts

How to Take Part

The best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day is to spend it with your loved ones. You don’t need to be in a romantic relationship—enjoy the day with close friends or family. Prepare for the holiday in advance by making handmade valentines, baking a cake, or choosing a thoughtful gift. In the evening, plan a special surprise to make the day even more memorable.
