Ninoy Aquino Day is a celebration of the commemoration of politician Benigno Aquino in the Philippines, celebrated every year on August 21st. This political activist was known by the nickname “Nina”. His second nickname was “Senator”.
Ninoy Aquino Day is named after a pro-democracy activist who served as Senator and Governor of Tarlac Province in the Philippines. He led the opposition to the regime of then President Ferdinand Marcos. In 1972, Marcos “made happy” the country with a military dictatorship. Senator Aquino was arrested and sent to a prison cell for 7 years.
In 1980, Marcos allowed him to travel to the United States for treatment – Aquino suffered from a heart disease. But the situation in his homeland worsened, and the senator decided to return home on August 21. About his return, he said: “Only death will stop me.” And so it happened – upon arriving at Manila International Airport, he was shot in the head.
Ninoy Aquino Day was officially established on February 2004, 25. The order to establish it was signed by the current President of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
- The first commemorative ceremony on Ninoy Aquino Day was hosted by Franklin Drillon, President of the Philippine Senate, and José de Venezia, who chaired the House of Representatives.
- The commemoration ceremony was attended by the current president of the country, ex-president Fidel V. Ramos and the future president, the son of the murdered fighter for democracy Benigno Aquino III.
- This national day is a non-working day. Work on this holiday is not paid at a double rate, as on ordinary holidays, workers receive compensation of 30% for each hour worked.
