Ninoy Aquino Day

Ninoy Aquino Day is a national holiday in the Philippines commemorating the assassination of politician Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr. on August 21.

Aquino was a pro-democracy activist and Senator who opposed the regime of President Ferdinand Marcos. In 1972, Aquino was arrested and imprisoned for seven years. In 1980, Marcos allowed him to travel to the United States for treatment for a heart condition, but the situation in the Philippines had worsened, and Aquino decided to return home. He famously declared, “Only death will stop me,” and upon arriving at Manila International Airport, he was shot in the head.

Ninoy Aquino Day was officially established on February 25, 2004 by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Interesting facts

  • The first commemorative ceremony on Ninoy Aquino Day was held by Franklin Drillon, President of the Philippine Senate, and José de Venezia, who chaired the House of Representatives.
  • The ceremony was attended by the then president of the Philippines, ex-president Fidel V. Ramos, and Benigno Aquino III, the future president and son of the assassinated democracy activist.
  • This national holiday is a non-working day, but workers who do work on this day receive a compensation of 30% for each hour worked, rather than the double rate paid on ordinary holidays.

How to take part

The People’s Power Commission organizes celebrations of Ninoy Aquino Day, with funding provided by the Office of the President and individual donations.
