National Maine Day celebrates one of the most unique states in the USA! Both locals and tourists praise the beauty of Maine’s mountains, lush forests, and its famous bay. Many creative people are inspired by Maine’s picturesque nature, making it a true haven for artists, writers, and adventurers.
History
The exact origin of Maine’s name remains a mystery, but people have inhabited the region for thousands of years. In 1763, during the French and Indian War, the land was ceded to England. During the Revolutionary War, Maine was part of Massachusetts, and the British harshly suppressed local resistance—most notably, they burned the port of Falmouth in 1775. Four years later, an American attack on British fortifications failed.
After the war, Maine remained part of Massachusetts. Efforts to separate began in 1807, but the first vote was unsuccessful. The conflict that followed during the War of 1812–1814 paved the way for a new constitution in 1819. Maine became the 23rd state of the United States in 1820. In the 19th century, a wave of Irish immigrants contributed to the growth of the Catholic Church. National Maine Day was established in 2017, although it is not an official public holiday.
