National Keto Day is about more than just a diet—it’s a lifestyle! The idea is to minimize carbohydrate intake and replace it with healthy fats and proteins. As a result, the body enters a unique metabolic state where it burns fat for fuel. Have you ever tried eating this way?
History
The ketogenic diet was first developed in 1921 by Dr. Russell Wilder. Through extensive research, he discovered that a strict reduction in carbohydrates could benefit patients with epilepsy. Previously, fasting was used to manage the condition—it was effective, but not a long-term solution. Dr. Wilder believed that his dietary approach could trigger the same metabolic state (ketosis) as fasting, while still allowing the body to be nourished.
The diet was first used clinically at the Mayo Clinic and became widely recognized for its success in treating epilepsy, even replacing certain medications by 1938. Over time, new treatment options emerged, and the keto diet faded from mainstream medical practice. However, it experienced a resurgence in the 1990s, especially as a popular weight loss strategy.
National Keto Day was established in 2019 by The Vitamin Shoppe to raise awareness of the ketogenic lifestyle and its benefits.
