National Doctors Day

National Doctors Day is an annual American holiday dedicated to doctors. It celebrates a socially essential profession. Thanks to medical professionals, we can better monitor our health and receive timely treatment. With advances in medicine, life expectancy has increased significantly. The holiday is observed on March 30.

History

The wife of a Georgia physician named E.B. Almond was responsible for creating National Doctors Day. She decided that doctors should be rewarded for their hard work, and establishing a professional holiday would be the best way to honor all professionals. The first celebration of the day took place in 1933.

The history of medicine dates back to ancient times when primitive methods of treatment were used, and herbal decoctions were popular (which were often effective).

The date of the celebration commemorates the first successful surgery using anesthesia. In 1842, physician Crawford W. Long performed a cyst removal using ether as anesthesia.

Interesting facts

  • The most famous ancient physicians are considered to be the philosophers Alcmaeon and Empedocles (around the 5th century B.C.).
  • Hippocrates is called the father of medicine. He was the first to compile and introduce the “Physician’s Code,” which all medical professionals were expected to adhere to. Today, it is known as the “Hippocratic Oath.”
  • The white coat as classic medical apparel appeared only in the first half of the 19th century. It was suggested by the German pediatrician Karl Rauchfuss. In the past, doctors’ clothing did not differ from civilian clothes, usually consisting of an apron.
