National Bow Tie Day is celebrated on August 28. This is the only holiday dedicated to one of the most unique accessories in men’s fashion. While a bow tie isn’t part of everyday wear for most people, that’s no reason to forget about this charming piece of clothing!
History
It’s unknown who first decided to celebrate National Bow Tie Day on August 28, but this accessory has a long and fascinating history. Its prototype was worn by Croatian soldiers during the Thirty Years’ War, which rocked the Holy Roman Empire from 1618 to 1648. These soldiers wore open-collared shirts and tied special handkerchiefs around their necks. French aristocrats admired this style and adopted the “cravat” (from the word “Croatian”) into their wardrobes. The bow tie evolved over time, and a version resembling the modern bow tie first appeared on a character in Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly, staged in 1904. Since the early 1900s, the bow tie has become part of the “uniform” of scientists and doctors. It was also a signature accessory of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and French architect Charles-Édouard Le Corbusier.
The New York Times journalist Warren St. John has said that the bow tie is an Old-World symbol suggesting a certain degree of intellectualism, real or perceived.
Today, bow ties are made from cotton, polyester, silk, or various blends.
