Serendipity Day

We encourage everyone to truly open their eyes to the world around them and see it differently on Serendipity Day! People often overlook the beautiful things that happen daily. At the same time, we are drawn to pleasant surprises—and when we receive them, we feel inspired.

History

The word “serendipity” was coined in 1754 by writer Horace Walpole after reading the Persian novel The Three Princes of Serendip. The story tells of three princes on a journey who understood the language of plants, animals, and birds, which warned them of danger.

According to Walpole, these “happy accidents” happened to them one after another, which seemed implausible. He wrote about it to a friend, gently mocking such circumstances.

Serendipity Day was first observed in 2010.

Interesting Facts

  • The word “serendipity” is one of the most popular in the United Kingdom.
  • Randomness is not truly random—people contribute to it by stepping outside their comfort zones or building social ties. The more active you are, the more likely you are to experience positive outcomes.
  • Luck and chance are not the same. “Chance” refers to unintentional occurrences, while “luck” includes those we actively pursue.

How to Take Part

Cinema often uses happy accidents as plot devices. Watch films like Serendipity (2001), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), or The Holiday (2006).

However you celebrate Serendipity Day, stay open to new opportunities and pay attention to every special moment that unfolds.
