National Bomb Pop Day celebrates the iconic red, white, and blue rocket-shaped popsicle, with flavors of cherry, lime, and blue raspberry. Observed on the last Thursday of June, this holiday honors a treat that has become a symbol of patriotism and nostalgia. But why does this popsicle deserve its own holiday?
History
The Bomb Pop was created on July 30, 1955, in Kansas City, Missouri, by Merritt Foods employees J. Merritt and D.S. Abernathy. The tension between the United States and the USSR during the Cold War inspired them to develop this patriotic treat, symbolizing the American flag, to lift the spirits of their fellow citizens.
In 1989, the Bomb Pop faced competition from the Firecracker Pop by Popsicle, sparking a 25-year market rivalry. Merritt Foods was acquired by Wells Dairy in 1991, ensuring the Bomb Pop’s continued production. Over the years, other versions of rocket-shaped popsicles have emerged, but the original Bomb Pop remains a classic. In 2005, the Bomb Pop celebrated its 50th anniversary, the same year National Bomb Pop Day was officially established.
