Leif Erikson Day is dedicated to the Norwegian explorer who brought the first Europeans to North America. Throughout the 20th century, the holiday was adopted by various states. He personifies the great contribution of the Norwegians to the development of the United States. October 9th is the best day of the year to remember this!
Leif Erikson was born in 970 or 980 and was a real Viking! His father was expelled from Iceland, so he and his family moved to Greenland. The extreme cold quickly got boring, and Leif put together a team for a trip to Norway. Key moments of his life took place there: he converted to Christianity, received an important mission to bring faith to Greenland.
Interestingly, he lost his course and sailed to North America! Here, together with his comrades, he created a small settlement for the winter, and in the spring they went back. From that moment on, Scandinavian settlements increased in America. Nothing is known about the death of the brave traveler, but the fact that he lived a bright and eventful life is obvious.
In 1964, the American Congress passed a law confirming the official holiday. Some US states celebrate an additional National Day in honor of Eriksona. It mostly happens in the Midwest.
It is curious that:
- Leifa had several sons. It is known that their mothers were different, and the man did not create his own family. However, it is known that he took the first son to himself and christened him Thorgills;
- there are legends that tell that not all Native Americans received Norwegian guests in a friendly way. There are references that they attacked the Vikings with catapults, and Leifa’s brother was personally killed by a local warrior;
- scientists have collected a lot of evidence that the Vikings lived in North America, but it is not known for certain what they did.
How to celebrate
Studying history on this day is the right decision! There are so many interesting and exciting things in it. Tell interesting moments to the younger generation and answer their questions. Call your Norwegian friends and wish them Happy Holidays!
