Leif Erikson Day is a holiday honoring the legendary Norwegian explorer who led the first Europeans to North America. History

Leif Erikson was born around 970 or 980 and was a true Viking adventurer. After his father was expelled from Iceland, the family settled in Greenland. Unhappy with the harsh conditions, Leif assembled a crew for a voyage to Norway. There, he converted to Christianity and was tasked with bringing the faith back to Greenland. However, Leif lost his course and landed in North America instead! He and his team established a small settlement for the winter before returning to Scandinavia in the spring. Afterward, more Scandinavian settlements appeared in America. Although the details of Leif’s later life and death remain unknown, his legacy is that of a life filled with adventure and discovery.

• Leif had several sons, though he never established his own family in the traditional sense. He took in his first son, Thorgills, and baptized him.
• Legends say not all Native Americans welcomed the Norse visitors. According to some tales, they attacked the Vikings with catapults, and Leif’s brother was killed by a local warrior.
