History
Helen Keller was born in Alabama in 1880. As a baby, she fell ill with an infectious disease that impaired her vision, hearing, and ability to speak. She was later brought to specialists in Boston, where she met her teacher, Anne Sullivan. Despite having poor eyesight, Anne taught herself to read and began teaching blind children using a technique of sensory perception. Thanks to this training, Helen went to college, setting an outstanding precedent. The national day in honor of this remarkable woman was established in 2006 with the support of the President.
