History
The history of Babe Ruth Day begins in 1946. That was the year Ruth was diagnosed with throat cancer. A.B. Chandler arrived at the hospital. He decided to visit the baseball star. It is said that the two men looked at each other that day with fire in their eyes and sadness in their hearts and cried at the end. Chandler watched Ruth grow weaker and weaker each time. April 27 has been a memorable date ever since. In 1948, Ruth passed away from the disease.
Babe Ruth is a native of Baltimore. In fact, his name was George Herman Root. Because of a violent incident that occurred in his father’s saloon, the boy was taken to an orphanage. There he was often visited by his older brother Matthias, who instilled in the boy a love of baseball.
Ruth’s journey began at the Baltimore Orioles. The club owner saw potential in the boy, adopted him and gave him the opportunity to play in his company. The real popularity came to Ruth when he played for the New York Yankees.
