History

The formation of the Knights of Columbus occurred on March 29, 1882. This was the date chosen for the annual Knights of Columbus Founders Day celebration.

The organization was created at the initiative of the Rev. McGivney. After its charter was approved, the organization began its work in 1882 in New Haven. The followers of the order were originally a small group of laymen of the Catholic faith. At first the order provided as much help as it could to immigrant Catholics, but later the scope of its activities expanded considerably.

Over its nearly 150-year history, the Order has helped hundreds of thousands of people!
