Slugs Return From Capistrano Day is a humorous, unofficial holiday. Every year, people celebrate birds returning from warm lands, so why not have a feast in honor of slugs?
History
Tom and Ruth Roy from Wellcat created this fun holiday. The couple became famous for inventing quirky holidays simply for enjoyment. Slugs Return From Capistrano Day made its way onto the calendar thanks to them.
It is believed that on March 19, swallows fly to La Mission de San Capistrano for the winter. Before then, slugs are in danger of being eaten by the hungry birds. Once the birds depart, the slugs slowly begin returning to gardens. Being slow creatures, it can take them up to two months to arrive. Therefore, May 28, exactly two months after March 19, was chosen for the holiday.
