National Puzzle Day

Any puzzle has a positive effect on the brain, helping to develop memory and problem-solving skills. National Puzzle Day is for everyone who enjoys crosswords, jigsaw puzzles, or sudoku. It is celebrated annually on January 29.

History

The earliest puzzles appeared in ancient times. In Egypt, archaeologists have discovered wall paintings resembling labyrinths with riddles. In medieval culture, puzzles became more prominent by the end of the nineteenth century. Over the years, their popularity grew, with many scientists linking this trend to a growing need for better education. An Irish educator even compiled a collection called “Problems for the Development of the Young Mind.”

The spread of puzzles was also influenced by Sam Loyd, who created the famous “Fifteen” puzzle. It consists of fifteen numbered square tiles, with one space left empty. The goal is to arrange the numbers in order using as few moves as possible.

In 1974, the Rubik’s Cube was invented by Ernő Rubik. This puzzle captivated young mathematicians and led to the formation of clubs and competitions dedicated to solving it quickly.
