National Potato Chip Day is an annual American holiday dedicated to potato chips. Favorite crunchy snacks and sugary carbonated drinks – who doesn’t want to indulge in junk food at least once a month? It’s insanely delicious! The holiday is celebrated on March 14.
The history of National Potato Chip Day is not known. Apparently, lovers of this snack decided to give it one day a year. This holiday is a great way to learn where the history of snacking began.
Researchers agree that the first chips appeared in 1853. Their creation is explained by a rather funny story. The situation took place in a cafe that belonged to a popular hotel in Saratoga Springs. One of the customers was unhappy with the fried potatoes he cooked. The refusal of the dish was explained by the excessive thickness of the slices and insufficient degree of cooking. Chef George Crum, who worked in the institution decided to teach a disgruntled customer a lesson. He cut the potatoes into very thin slices, added more salt, and deep-fried them. Surprisingly, the customer was satisfied, and other visitors to the institution have also shown a desire to try a new dish. The chips we know today were born.
In today’s world, chips are a very popular snack in all countries of the world. You can buy them in stores in a variety of flavors: barbecue, onion and sour cream, crabmeat and many others. Everyone will find an option for themselves.
- Chips are a very fatty food that should not be eaten often. Otherwise, the load on the gastrointestinal organs increases, and the likelihood of weight gain.
- The place where Crum worked was called Moon’s Lake House. It’s a funny fact that the chef himself followed a healthy diet, and rumor has it that he even hated chips.
- The production of chips on an industrial scale was made possible by Freeman Macbeth in 1929. Before that, chips were only available to the rich, because they were served in expensive cafes and restaurants.
