National Neighborhood Day was created for those who want to build friendly relationships with their neighbors. Being a good neighbor is not only enjoyable but also practical—friendly connections can lead to lifelong friendships, and neighbors are often the first to help in difficult situations. September 28 is a perfect reason to reach out and connect with the people living nearby.
History
In 1947, William Levitt and his sons built a community in New York State for 2,000 people—setting the stage for modern neighborhood living. In 1989, the film The ‘Burbs starring Tom Hanks depicted the quirks and camaraderie among neighbors. On the last day of summer in 2001, the final episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood aired, reminding everyone of the value of kindness and community.
How to Be a Good Neighbor
- Always greet your neighbors, be friendly, make conversation, and show sincere interest in their lives.
- Meet new neighbors—be the first to introduce yourself, bring a treat, and offer a warm welcome.
- Keep your yard tidy and take care of flower beds and lawns—this creates a pleasant environment for everyone.
- Respect others’ privacy; remember that some people value their solitude and may not want to share much about themselves.
How to Take Part
Host a picnic or neighborhood party to meet those living around you and foster a sense of community. Join your neighborhood association or local council to help make your area more beautiful, welcoming, and connected.
