National Hoagie Day is a fantastic holiday for those who love good food but prefer not to spend too much time cooking. The hoagie offers a delicious alternative to the usual burgers, chips, nuggets, and French fries.
History
There are several versions of the origin of the hoagie. According to one version, Italians working in Philadelphia in 1953 would bring lunch to work each day. Their meal resembled a large sandwich, consisting of various meats, sauces, cheeses, and herbs, all placed between two slices of bread. This sandwich was initially nicknamed “Hog Island,” but the name later evolved into “Hoagie.”
In another version, the sandwich originated in South Philadelphia in the early 20th century. Meat and cheese were placed in an Italian roll and called a “Hokie,” but immigrants mispronounced the word as “Hoagie,” which quickly became the common name.
In 1992, the hoagie was officially declared the sandwich of Philadelphia.
