The National Day of Encouragement was initiated in 2007 by students at Harding University, who launched a social project to address the negative effects of a lack of support and encouragement. The date was chosen in response to the need for national unity and positivity following the September 11 attacks.

The holiday was first recognized city-wide on September 12, 2007, after official approval on August 22, 2007. It later received statewide recognition in Arkansas and was proclaimed a national day of observance by the U.S. President that same year.
