National Brutus Day is an annual American holiday dedicated to the theme of betrayal. It is based on the ancient Roman story of the conspiracy and assassination of Julius Caesar by his trusted friend Brutus. The holiday is observed on March 15.
History
The story behind National Brutus Day dates back to 44 B.C. The conspiracy against Caesar, whose power continued to grow, began with the general and statesman Gaius Cassius Longinus. He gathered a small circle of allies to plan the assassination, but the plot initially lacked authority and influence. It also lacked someone close enough to Caesar to gain his trust.
For this reason, the conspirators turned to Marcus Junius Brutus, a respected senator and a close friend of Caesar. Brutus brought his brother and several others into the conspiracy. Caesar received multiple warnings that an assassination was being planned for the Ides of March, an ancient Roman date that fell on March 15 and later became linked to the holiday. Despite the warnings, Caesar dismissed them.
On the appointed day, Caesar went to the Senate, though with some hesitation. Brutus reassured him and convinced him to attend. Once inside, the conspirators surrounded Caesar and began to stab him. He resisted until he saw Brutus among the attackers. According to tradition, this moment marked the deepest betrayal of all and gave rise to the symbolism of the holiday.
