International Nurses Day is a day of gratitude and recognition for this humane, important, and irreplaceable profession. A nurse is the doctor’s faithful assistant, dedicated to ensuring your well-being. Take the time to thank and congratulate your nurse on her professional holiday.

History

International Nurses Day was established in 1971 by the International Council of Nurses. The date, May 12, was chosen to honor the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the first English nurse, who founded the Nursing School in 1860. The purpose of the holiday is to express gratitude and recognition to nurses who care for patients’ well-being every day.

It is worth noting that the nursing profession appeared much earlier. The first nurses did not have formal medical education: nuns, church ministers, and volunteers assisted and cared for the sick and dying.

Entire communities were formed in Europe, dedicated to this challenging work. Initially, these groups cared for the sick and dying, later expanding their efforts to include the treatment of wounded soldiers.

Nurses often remain unnoticed, with all the credit for a patient’s recovery going to the doctor. However, nurses do just as much work as doctors. There are numerous instances when a nurse notices something crucial and makes a decision that saves a patient’s life and health.

How to Take Part

On this day, information conferences, concerts, and festive dinners are held. Each person can personally congratulate nurses.

1. If you find yourself in the hospital, present a small bouquet to your nurse, expressing your gratitude and appreciation.
2. Organize volunteer work to support healthcare facilities.
3. Print and distribute informational leaflets about the important role of nurses.
4. Launch a social media campaign or flash mob using the #InternationalNursesDay hashtag.
