National Bock Beer Day

National Bock Beer Day is an annual American holiday dedicated to a German beer style known as bock. This strong beer can be brewed using either top or bottom fermentation. It is celebrated each year on March 20.

History

According to historical records, bock beer originated in the town of Einbeck. Originally a village, Einbeck received city status in 1240. From that point on, local brewers officially produced a beer known for its higher alcohol content. The increased strength allowed the beer to withstand long-distance transport to other European regions without spoiling.

After the German Beer Purity Law was issued in 1516, brewing techniques were adjusted to comply with the new regulations. Over time, the name of the beer evolved from the town’s name. Due to pronunciation changes influenced by the Bavarian dialect, Einbeck gradually became known as bockbier, later shortened to bock.

Interesting Facts

  • There are several styles of bock beer. Doppelbock is a stronger version with a wort extract of about 18 percent and an alcohol content ranging from 8 to 12 percent. Alcohol levels above 13 percent typically stop yeast activity, so brewers remove excess water to increase strength. Eisbock is produced differently. Once fermentation reaches its peak, the beer is partially frozen, the ice is removed, and a highly concentrated beer remains.
  • Doppelbock is believed to have been first brewed by Italian monks who settled in Bavaria. This occurred in 1629.
  • The word “bock” means “goat” in German, which is why goats frequently appear on bock beer labels.

How to Take Part

Purchase bock beer from a store or a craft brewery and enjoy its rich, malty flavor. Bock beer pairs especially well with sausages, roasted meats, and other hearty dishes.
