History

The history of the Exchange Club movement began in 1911, when the first club was established in Detroit. Celebrate Exchange Day marks this milestone and recognizes the long running impact of Exchange Clubs. The organization continues to operate today and is guided by three core values: family, community, and country. Its work focuses on service projects that support local needs, including efforts related to child abuse prevention.

The idea of exchange clubs quickly gained support. A second club was founded two years later in Toledo, followed by several more. In 1917, these local groups came together under a nonprofit umbrella organization called the National Exchange Club, which now supports and coordinates Exchange Clubs across the United States.
