History

Amerigo Vespucci Day was established in March 1959, when New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller issued an official proclamation in honor of the explorer. The celebration date coincides with Vespucci’s birthday.

Amerigo Vespucci was born in Florence on March 9, 1454. One of his most important voyages took place in 1499, when he and his crew sailed into the Gulf of Maracaibo and visited the West Indies. Tragically, upon returning to Europe, the expedition transported 200 enslaved Indigenous people from the New World.

Vespucci made additional voyages to the Americas in the early 1500s. His accounts helped map much of what is now Brazil and contributed significantly to European knowledge of the continent’s geography. His writings were instrumental in demonstrating that Columbus had not reached Asia, but an entirely new landmass.
