Haunted Refrigerator Night

Haunted Refrigerator Night is celebrated on October 30 each year. It is a holiday created by Thomas and Ruth Roy of Wellcat Holidays & Herbs, which coincides with the “Day of Mischief” and encourages imaginative pranks. The purpose of the day is to clean out the refrigerator and get rid of any food that is past its expiration date or has gone bad.

History

The tradition of keeping food in a cold environment dates back to 1000 BC when the Persians, Jews, and Greeks used various tricks to preserve their food. In the 19th century, ice boxes were used, which were the first analogs of modern refrigerators. Scottish professor William Cullen invented the refrigeration machine in 1755, although it wasn’t able to produce enough ice. Over time, people have experimented with different technologies and now we have devices that can store food for a long time.

Interesting facts

  • Modern refrigerators use about 10% of total energy consumption.
  • They work more efficiently when full.
  • In the 1950s, refrigerators usually came in white, but now they come in all sorts of colors.
