World Leprosy Day is traditionally on the last Sunday of January. It is dedicated to the fight against leprosy, a disease that in many countries is considered extinct. In fact, it continues to spread and has destructive properties that can take a person’s life.
History
Hansen’s disease affects the nervous system, spreading to the face, arms, and legs. An infected person often does not even feel pain, which can lead to serious injury or even loss of limbs. Some patients also experience weakness and a sharp decrease in vision.
Leprosy got its second name in honor of the Norwegian doctor Gerhard Hansen. He gained fame when he first identified the bacteria that cause the disease. In the middle of the last century, a decision was made to create World Leprosy Day. In India, it is on January 30, the day of the death of Mahatma Gandhi.
Despite the awareness of people in developed countries, in some cases, sick people become victims of discrimination. They are denied assistance and do not receive compassion.
Interesting facts
- According to official figures, there are between 2 and 3 million people worldwide with a disability caused by leprosy.
- In 2018, the incidence peaked. According to inaccurate reports, cases have appeared in more than a hundred countries around the world. They also included Brazil, India, and Indonesia.
- There are many myths that prevent people from adequately perceiving the news of the disease. Some even believe that the affected limbs simply fall off. The idea of how the disease is transmitted is also erroneous. You can stand next to the infected person and shake their hand. World Leprosy Day was created to combat these wrong opinions.
How to celebrate
This day calls for prudence and humanity. Often, public parades are organized in large cities. You can visit treatment centers and try to support those suffering from Hansen’s disease. There are also charities where even the smallest help can make a real difference and save the life of someone who desperately needs it.
