World IBD Day is dedicated to raising awareness about inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). On this day, events are held to support patients with IBD, and informational campaigns are organized to increase understanding of these conditions.
History
Inflammatory bowel disease is a group of disorders that can cause significant damage to the intestinal wall. This group includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. IBD affects men, women, adolescents, and children alike. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, weakness, skin rashes, diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, and more. The causes of IBD can vary, including genetic predisposition, infections, vitamin deficiencies, and bacterial overgrowth.
American gastroenterologist Burrill Crohn first described Crohn’s disease during a professional meeting on May 19, 1932, and the disease was subsequently named after him. May 19 was later established as World IBD Day, now observed on five continents and in over 50 countries.
