World Hemophilia Day is a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about hemophilia and educating people about treatment options. It is celebrated annually on April 17.
History
The history of World Hemophilia Day began in 1989. The initiative to establish this day came from the World Federation of Hemophilia.
Hemophilia is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a deficiency of proteins in the blood that are essential for clotting. As a result, even minor injuries can lead to severe bleeding, which is very difficult to stop. The condition is hereditary and predominantly affects males.
The first mention of hemophilia dates back to the 10th century AD. At that time, doctors noticed that certain men experienced severe bleeding even from small wounds. The disease was initially known as abulcasis. Due to the limited medical knowledge of the time, the true causes of the condition remained unidentified. Historical records indicate that many individuals with hemophilia were related to royalty. Aspirin, which has antithrombotic effects, was mistakenly used as a treatment, although it was ineffective.
In 1803, Philadelphia physician Dr. John Conrad Otto identified the genetic nature of the disease. Over time, hemophilia was studied further, and in 1957, it was determined that the condition is caused by a deficiency of specific clotting factors.
Today, there is no cure for hemophilia. Individuals with the condition require regular injections of clotting factors to manage their blood’s ability to clot.
Interesting Facts
- Hemophilia primarily affects males; women are carriers of the gene but typically do not develop the disease themselves.
- The disease is classified into types A and B, depending on the specific missing clotting factor.
- Although rare, there have been about 60 documented cases of hemophilia in females due to gene mutations.
