World Day of Prayer

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide holiday dedicated to bridging the divide between different streams of Christianity. It is every first Friday of March. The celebrations cover more than 170 countries from around the world.

History

Christianity is in some ways a unique religion because, under one name, it unites people who worship in different ways. Despite the fact that religion is supposed to unite and call for peace, there have been repeated instances of rejection and humiliation of people who hold other religious views. Such a problem needs to be corrected.

At the end of the 19th century, representatives of the Ecumenical Movement, which was formed on the basis of Protestantism (one of the Christian denominations), began the initiative of uniting all Christians. The idea continued with the establishment of the World Day of Prayer. This holiday was created thanks to enterprising women of different cultures and races, who called on all Christians to unite and say prayers on this day. The first event was held in 1887 and since then, the celebration of the day has been firmly entrenched in society.

The ideas of World Day of Prayer were actively promoted during the World Wars when divisions on religious grounds were the most futile exercise in the current environment. In honor of the holiday, many churches hold services, which are attended by many believers.
