World Day of Prayer

World Day of Prayer is a global observance dedicated to strengthening unity among different Christian traditions. It is held every first Friday in March and is celebrated in more than 170 countries around the world.

History

Christianity is unique in that it brings together people with diverse worship practices under one faith. Yet throughout history, there have been tensions and divisions among Christians of different traditions. The World Day of Prayer was created to help heal these divisions and promote understanding.

In the late 19th century, women involved in the Ecumenical Movement, which emerged from Protestant circles, began calling for greater unity among Christians. Their efforts led to the establishment of the World Day of Prayer. The first event took place in 1887, organized by women of different cultures and backgrounds who encouraged Christians everywhere to join in prayer on the same day.

The message of the holiday gained even more importance during the World Wars, when religious divisions seemed especially small in comparison to global suffering. Today, churches around the world hold special services, drawing millions of believers into shared prayer and reflection.
