World Cocktail Day is a significant date in the bar industry. This is a great holiday to drink cocktails with friends: short, fruity, or multi-layered, based on martini, tequila, or absinthe – you can try several of them.
A cocktail is a drink prepared by mixing a few ingredients. Spices, sauces, ice, fresh fruits, or berries can be added. The meaning of the word cocktail is rather interesting. There are many legends about its origin. According to one version, it came from cockfighting. To make the roosters more aggressive, they were fed with a mixture of various alcoholic drinks, nicknamed ‘cock ale’. Later, people began to drink it themselves. The number of ingredients was equal to the number of feathers in the winning rooster’s tail.
Cocktails can be non-alcoholic or alcoholic. They are also divided according to serving and consumption time: aperitifs (before meals), digestifs (during meals) and others (at any time). There is a broader classification of cocktails according to their taste: multi-layered, sangari (based on Spanish red wine), based on milk, and others.
International Cocktail Day is actively celebrated by the independent public organization Drinkaware Trust. Participants claim cocktails can change drinking culture and reduce alcohol abuse. The organization’s blog regularly posts information about International Cocktail Day events, safe drinking, and original drink recipes.
