Rain Day was established in honor of a phenomenon people worshiped and glorified. People depended on rain – moisture let plants grow and ended droughts. Rain is incredibly important for the planet – moisture is necessary to keep its surface green, blooming, and fertile.

History

Rain Day was first in the 19th century on the initiative of pharmacist William Ellison. His pharmacy was on High Street in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. William noticed it rained every year on July 29, so he decided to keep a record of it. This tradition was continued by his son, Albert Ellison.

The event might have been lost to history if reporter John O’Hara hadn’t started sending articles about Rain Day to other outlets around the country and even around the world. Thanks to this, the holiday has spread globally, and many publications still call Waynesburg on July 29 to find out if it’s a rainy day or not.
