Ninoy Aquino Day

Ninoy Aquino Day is a national holiday in the Philippines commemorating the assassination of politician Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. on August 21.

History

Aquino was a pro-democracy activist and senator who opposed the regime of President Ferdinand Marcos. In 1972, Aquino was arrested and imprisoned for seven years. In 1980, Marcos allowed him to travel to the United States for treatment for a heart condition, but the situation in the Philippines had worsened, and Aquino decided to return home. He famously declared, “Only death will stop me,” and upon arriving at Manila International Airport, he was shot in the head.

Ninoy Aquino Day was officially established on February 25, 2004, by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Interesting Facts

  • The first commemorative ceremony for Ninoy Aquino Day was held by Senate President Franklin Drilon and House Speaker José de Venecia.
  • The event was attended by then-president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, former president Fidel V. Ramos, and Benigno Aquino III, the future president and son of the late senator.
  • This national holiday is a non-working day. Employees who do work on this date receive 130% of their regular hourly rate, unlike the double rate paid on standard public holidays.

How to Take Part

The People Power Commission organizes celebrations of Ninoy Aquino Day, funded by the Office of the President and private donations. Parades, cultural events, and memorial ceremonies are held in honor of Aquino. Supporters of democracy often visit his two memorials: a bronze monument in Makati next to the stock exchange, and a statue in front of the municipal hall in Concepción, Tarlac.
