History
Filled flatbreads became the precursor of the dish we now call pizza. They were popular in the era of Antiquity in Rome, Egypt, and Greece. These flatbreads remained relatively unchanged until the 1800s.
At the beginning of the 19th century, there were many poor people in Naples who spent most of their time in hard, low-paid work. To restore their strength, they prepared cakes stuffed with cheese, tomatoes, butter, and other ingredients. This dish, called lazzaroni, became the basis for the future pizza.
The next significant event in the history of pizza occurred in 1889. King Umberto I visited Naples with his wife, and they enjoyed the taste of lazzaroni. At a local establishment, they tried a mozzarella pie, which is now known as “pizza margherita.”
The spread of pizza in the United States happened in the 1940s when Italian immigrants arrived in America. Around that time, pizza began to resemble its modern version, with various toppings layered on round-shaped dough and then baked. Pizza has become an integral part of our lives, and today we celebrate National Pizza Day to honor it!
