National Pit Bull Awareness

National Pit Bull Awareness Day is celebrated on the last Saturday of October in America. Dedicated to the smartest of the breeds, it is a day to recognize those who cannot imagine life without a four-legged friend. Despite the stereotypes that these animals are formidable, harsh and even dangerous, they are actually kind, devoted and loving creatures. This day aims to dispel these myths and celebrate the breed.

History

National Pit Bull Awareness Day is celebrated annually and includes more than 70 organizations, social media communities, activists and non-profit institutions. Their mission is to tell the truth about dogs, to help make the right choice when acquiring a dog, and to destroy misconceptions. The breed was developed in the 18th century in England by crossing a bulldog with a terrier, likely for the purpose of controlling rodents that were damaging the industry. Unfortunately, some took advantage of the breed for use in dog fights. Nowadays, pit bulls are affectionate and beloved animals, acting as nannies for children, and often their protectors on the street.

Interesting facts

  • They are real bodyguards – they will easily sacrifice their lives for a two-legged ward.
  • They do not tolerate loneliness, and can even get sick if they are without the attention of the owner for a long time.
  • They have a high level of intelligence and require education, as they can be destructive if not trained.
  • They require high activity and load – running, jumping, carrying sticks, playing with a sword.
