National Pet Parent’s Day

On the last Sunday in April, a holiday dedicated to the care of pets is celebrated with the unique name of National Pet Parents Day. It is not customary to congratulate pet owners on Mother’s or Father’s Day, so this day is set aside to honor those who consider their pets as family. Put on leashes (for dogs), grab some toys, and head to the park for a fun and long walk.

History

Thousands of years ago, wild animals found refuge in human settlements. Over time, humans began to care for orphaned animal cubs, eventually domesticating and breeding them for various needs or simply for companionship. Certain types of animals were even considered sacred, revered as deities, and protected. As agriculture became the main occupation of ancient people, animals were utilized for labor. By the 13th century, pets began to serve as companions, especially among the nobility. Small dog breeds were kept by noblewomen in richly furnished homes, while men often took larger dogs on hunts. By the 19th century, pet ownership became widespread among the general populace. Today, about 70% of Americans have pets. These little companions provide emotional support, protection, and even perform roles in films and social services, such as guide dogs and search-and-rescue animals.
