National Orange Blossom Day is mainly in the United States, where orange blossoms are widely used in cooking, cosmetics, and perfumery. Orange flowers have a wonderful aroma, but their beneficial properties are not limited to this.
History
It is not known who started National Orange Blossom Day, but it can be assumed it originated from the people of Florida. Since 1909, the orange flower has been the state symbol. Growing oranges is a developed industry in Florida; about 3 million tons of oranges are harvested there annually. Essential oils, cosmetics, perfumery products, and fragrant honey are produced from orange tree flowers. Previously, garlands and bouquets of fleur d’orange were exported from Florida when the tradition of decorating wedding dresses with them was alive.
Interesting Facts
Orange flowers are becoming more popular as a food product. Their taste is delicate and slightly tart, and they contain essential oils, vitamins C and P, and phytoncides. They are low in calories and are popular with vegetarians. If orange flowers are used to decorate dishes, they do not need to be removed from the plate—they can be eaten! They help digestion, cleanse the body, strengthen the immune system, normalize heart function, and calm the nervous system.
How to Take Part
Celebrate National Orange Blossom Day with these beautiful flowers.
- Prepare candied flowers. You will need a beaten egg white, powdered sugar, a sheet of parchment on a baking tray, and an oven preheated to 70°C (160°F). With a brush, apply the egg white to the flowers, dip each flower in powder, and dry in the oven. You can store candied flowers in an airtight jar for no longer than one month.
- Brew green tea with fresh or dried orange blossoms. For a teaspoon of green tea, add a tablespoon of flowers. Pour hot, but not boiling, water over it and leave for 5-7 minutes.
