National Hard Candy Day celebrates the sweet treat that has stood the test of time! Though there are now many varieties of sweets, hard candy has a special place in everyone’s childhood memories. Adults often carry a few pieces in their pockets as a sweet surprise.
History
The origin of candy dates back to ancient Egypt, where dates, honey, and almonds were used as primary ingredients. In Rome, candy was made with poppy, sesame, walnuts, molasses, and maple syrup. France even incorporated candy into state affairs, as one chancellor was able to win the king’s favor by presenting him a dish of candied fruit. It is believed that the term “candy” was coined by Italian pharmacists, who used the treats solely for medicinal purposes.
In 1659, the first chocolate factory was founded in France by confectioner David Shelley. He created what we now recognize as candy, and they were often sold in beautiful copper and silver boxes (bonbonnieres) decorated with precious stones. These boxes were presented at weddings and to dignitaries, and now you can do the same on National Hard Candy Day!
