National Dog Day

National Dog Day is a day dedicated to celebrating all dogs – purebred and mixed breeds living in families and in service. Many dogs become our friends and companions, teaching our children empathy and compassion. Specially trained animals work as bodyguards, serve in law enforcement agencies, improve the quality of life for the disabled, and search for drugs and explosive devices planted by terrorists. They also help find victims of natural disasters and terrorist attacks under the rubble of buildings. The contribution of dogs to our society cannot be underestimated.

History

The initiative for National Dog Day belongs to Colin Page, who is an expert on pets, an active animal and wildlife advocate, and a skilled dog trainer. The date of August 26th was chosen in honor of Colin’s significant day: on that day, she adopted her first dog, a Sheltie, from a shelter.

National Dog Day has been celebrated since 2004 and has gained popularity in the United States and other countries.

Interesting facts

One of the oldest stories of a dog’s exploits is the Welsh legend of Gelert, Prince Llywelyn’s Irish wolfhound.
