National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is an American holiday dedicated to raising HIV/AIDS awareness in the Asia-Pacific region. It is annually on May 19. It is aimed at reducing the incidence of the disease and improving prevention measures.
History
The history of the holiday begins in 2005. It was created by the Banyan Tree Project with the support of the C.D.C. The main goals of this holiday are to increase awareness of this infectious chronic disease among people in the Asia-Pacific region.
In 2009 an important event took place for the whole of medicine: scientists deciphered the complete structure of the HIV genome. Thanks to this discovery, it is possible to create new tools for diagnosing the disease and improve existing therapeutic methods.
Today, no cure for the disease has yet been developed, but existing medications make it possible to minimize the rate at which the disease develops so that people can live to a ripe old age.

- HIV is only transmitted through blood and sexual contact. It cannot be transmitted any other way.
- HIV affects a special type of lymphocytes, as a result of which the cells of the immune system begin to attack the body itself, destroying it.
- The disease is thought to have originated about a century ago among monkeys in West Africa, after which it began to affect humans.
