National Apricot Day is dedicated to orange fruits that have such a rich and bright taste! Sometimes they are confused with peaches—we urge you not to do this, because apricots are a separate type of fruit. Join the celebration and find out more!
History
Unfortunately, scientists were unable to determine exactly when and where apricots first appeared—their habitat is quite large. Many believe that they originated in China, where they grew at least 2000 years before Christ. From there, apricots began to spread throughout the world: they were brought to Greece, called the “Armenian apple,” and then Spanish settlers brought the fruits to America. No wonder we celebrate National Apricot Day today—everyone loves apricots!
The common apricot variety is the most popular, and other species have been derived from it. Today, apricots are grown almost everywhere! Some varieties even thrive in more northern regions, thanks to breeders who transformed apricots from a heat-loving fruit into a more resilient one. Interestingly, apricots were once grown exclusively in greenhouses.
