In the history of the United States, the 16th president occupies a special place. Lincoln’s Birthday (February 12) was a national holiday until the mid-70s, but then it was abolished. However, most Americans still celebrate this holiday.
History
During the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, many significant laws were passed, which made a huge contribution to the development of the country. The most memorable were the decrees on the abolition of slavery and the Homestead Act, which gave every citizen the right to own a plot of land.
Abraham Lincoln loved the people and tried to make the lives of ordinary Americans better. Citizens appreciated him and even elected him for a second presidential term.
When it was decided to cancel Lincoln’s Birthday and honor the memory of Lincoln and other prominent political figures on one day, called Presidents’ Day (celebrated annually on the third Monday of February), many disagreed.
Residents of California, New Jersey, Illinois, Missouri, New York, and Indiana still celebrate Lincoln’s Birthday.
