National Pina Colada Day

The origins of National Pina Colada Day are currently unknown, but Google recognizes this holiday as an official holiday! A piña colada is a sweet cocktail which consists of rum, cream of coconut, and pineapple juice. The alcoholic beverage is typically blended or shaken with ice. Common garnishes for piña coladas are cherries, a slice of pineapple, or both. Next time the bartender asks you to «name your poison», don’t order a martini or any similar alcoholic beverages. Simply order a tall piña colada in a Poco Grande glass! It will put a smile on your face, and send your mind through memories of past vacations!

Celebrate this weird holiday by mixing yourself a tall piña colada! Carve out the inside of a pineapple, and use it as your glass for your piña colada! Go to a bar or a liquor store, and buy a piña colada or some piña colada mix. If you don’t drink alcohol, order a virgin piña colada. Visit the ocean, and enjoy one of these sweet cocktails on the beach. Wish your friends and family a «Happy National Pina Colada Day!». Put on some headphones, and listen to “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes. Spend a night out on the town with friends, and drink some piña coladas! However you decide to celebrate National Pina Colada Day, enjoy your piña colada responsibly!

The History

Originally served in the Caribbean and tropical regions, this drink is steeped in mystery, folklore, and conflict. One of the first versions of Pina Colada appeared near Puerto Rico on a pirate ship under the command of Captain Robert Cofresi, who sailed the seas at the beginning of the 19th century. With this cocktail, the captain raised the morale of the crew, but the recipe was lost after his death in 1825.

The drink was rediscovered in 1954 thanks to the mixologist Ricardo Garcia, who was born in Barcelona and worked at the Hilton. And it happened because of a series of accidents that provoked by a strike of the coconut carvers union and a shortage of the resort drink Coco-Loco. With no fresh coconut shell on hand, Ricardo served the drink in a hollowed-out pineapple glass.
