International Strange Music Day, on August 24th, is a day dedicated to encouraging professional composers and musicians to experiment and search for new forms of music. It also encourages listeners to discover and explore non-standard music in new styles or performed on unusual instruments. This holiday aims to showcase music from unexpected perspectives and reveal the diversity of the music world.
History
The holiday was invented by Patrick Grant, a composer from the USA. He had always been interested in composing non-standard works, synthesizing classical, pop, post-punk, techno, ambient, and other genres and styles. However, no record label was interested in releasing his experimental compositions. In response, Grant created and promoted his own label, Strange Music, with the goal of discovering and promoting truly fresh and innovative musical phenomena.
He chose August 24th as the date for the holiday in honor of his mentor’s birthday, who was also the father of his girlfriend. As the holiday gained popularity, especially in Europe, the name was changed to International Strange Music Day.
