International Migrants Day is an important occasion in today’s world. Migration has always required courage and determination—not everyone is willing to leave their home and take big risks. Those who do should be celebrated for their strength and resilience.

History

Throughout history, people have migrated from one region to another in search of fertile land, abundant resources, or better opportunities. Migration has helped civilizations grow, exchange knowledge, and develop new cultures. From the ancient Silk Road to the explorations of the 15th to 17th centuries, people from Portugal, France, Ireland, and England journeyed to the Americas. The African population was also part of these movements. By the 16th century, it’s estimated that 50 million settlers had moved from Europe.

International Migrants Day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1997. In 2016, the New York Declaration was adopted to support safe and orderly migration worldwide.
