International Children’s Book Day is celebrated on April 2nd. The history of children’s books began in the 19th century, when the public recognized that little people needed their own books; from that moment children’s literature flourished. Adults also liked children’s literature, as it was distinguished by its lively language, wild imagination and humor.

Famous Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen (born this day in 1805) became well-known in the whole world for his fairy tales for children. That’s why April 2nd became the day when people remember the benefits of children’s books.

This day was established in 1967 by the initiative of the International Council for Children’s Books (IBBY). The aim was to emphasize the important role of children’s books in shaping the spiritual and intellectual image of the child, promoting a love of reading and drawing attention to children’s books.

There are 50% more rare words in children’s books than in adult conversations. If ordinary conversation helps children master the basic set of words and expressions, then they can learn rare words only when reading. Children who read a lot begin to use new words in communication with others. Their speech gradually becomes literate and rich. With such skills it is easier to put thoughts into words and build relationships. This is a huge benefit of reading for children.

During the days of the holiday a congress of the International Council for Children’s Books is also held. It is the day when the best artists and children’s writers of this year are selected and awarded, and the award is presented in the name of the beloved storyteller Andersen. Each award winner receives a beautiful gold medal with his profile.

How to Celebrate

Children’s Book Day encourages people to get the most favorite book from the very childhood out and read it through again, maybe to their children or grandchildren.

A good contribution to the development of love to reading will be some donations to children’s libraries – one can simply bring their home books or buy a subscription to some interesting series of books for a library or a children literary club.
