Drowsy Drivers Awareness Day

Drowsy Drivers Awareness Day is an American holiday that raises awareness about the dangers of driving while drowsy. If you are too tired and feel the need to sleep, it’s better to refrain from driving, as it can lead to disastrous consequences. It’s very easy to get into an accident when your concentration is minimal. Don’t make this mistake! The holiday is observed annually on April 6.

History

The holiday was created by a man named Phil Constantine. In 1999, his wife fell asleep at the wheel and was involved in a fatal accident. Seven years later, he decided to bring attention to this danger and honor his wife by creating Drowsy Drivers Awareness Day.

This day also raises awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. When a small dose of alcohol is consumed, concentration may initially increase, but this effect quickly wears off. With larger doses, not only does concentration suffer, but control over the body diminishes as well. Performing even the simplest actions becomes difficult. Severe intoxication behind the wheel often leads to serious accidents, with 95% of such cases resulting in grave consequences.

Interesting Facts

  • Sleeping at the wheel causes about 100,000 accidents each year, and approximately 20% of them are fatal.
  • Statistically, drowsiness causes 30% more accidents than drunk driving.
  • More than half of all drowsiness-related accidents involve drivers traveling long distances, especially long-haul truckers.

How to Celebrate

Remind your relatives and friends who work as truck drivers or often travel long distances about the dangers of driving while drowsy. If you yourself often drive while sleep-deprived, it’s crucial to stop making that mistake!

Share information about the holiday on social media. Ask others how often they’ve driven while drowsy.
